TOGETHER WE THRIVE
For the 24HR Digital Design Challenge I created a short stop motion film for the Screen Media submission section. The short story is focused on Douglas, a simple man who earns money by selling bread. One day, on his way back home from selling his goods, he finds his house has burned down. Upset, Douglas buys a boat in search of a new home and stumbles upon Denise, a fisherman living in the middle of the ocean. Denise is nice enough to let Douglas live with her, and they eventually form a bond which is evident in the renovation of their home.
The idea was inspired by my limitations, and simplification of the prompt. I took the prompt to mean a relationship, and not having any actors, I decided to film a stop motion in the sandbox game Minecraft. The story responds to the prompt through Douglas and Denise's relationship, showcasing a home that evolves and doesn't break, unlike Douglas' previous home.
The experience of working on this project required a lot of patience, having to repeat the same action multiple times to move each character through each scene. In addition, because I used Minecraft, my computer's battery drained multiple times throughout the 24 hours, which required me to take occasional breaks. Overall, I enjoyed creating the characters and builds for each scene, which made the monotonous aspects less frustrating and more doable. The one thing I would like to have done would be include audio for a more immersive effect, however I ran out of time.
